What are the Top 10 Questions to Ask Before Responding to an Request for Proposal (RFP)

Top Ten Questions to Ask Before Responding to an RFP

Most sales professionals who have been in the business for several years wrestle with whether or not to respond to RFPs. This is especially true when you receive an unsolicited RFP or one you did not know was coming out from an existing client. The first step is to qualify the opportunity and see if it is worth your company's time and resources to put together an effective proposal. Most people believe RFP's are usually written for one vendor who has the inside track on the opportunity. If this is the case, then your bid is probably just column fodder so the sponsor can say they did an RFP and have competitive bids to justify their vendor selection.
With that being said, I have been able to steal away a couple of RFPs from an incumbent vendor who did the preliminary requirements analysis on a project. This was done in part by quickly getting directly to the project sponsor and proactively suggesting a superior solution and the previous experience to back up the proposal.

Here are 10 questions to ask yourself in order to qualify an RFP opportunity:

1.       What do they want to buy?
2.       ...

Guide to effective use of Sales Leads

Selling is an art, without a doubt. Perhaps even a sport. It takes energy, guts, brains and a bit of panache to barge into people's work days and win them over. It helps, of course, if they are already looking for your service or product. That's where a sales lead list, or lead generation, comes in.

A properly built list of business leads is more than basic demographics and phone number. A sales leads list is a tool for turning strangers into acquaintances and, if not personal friends, at least into loyal and regular customers. Lead generation is paramount to sales success.

Covered in this guide:

  1. Getting the right sales leads
  2. Roll-your-own sales lead generation
  3. Turning sales leads into clients, fast
  4. Turning business leads into repeat sales

Action Steps for Using Sales Leads and Lead Generation

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

A sales lead list must be specific Make certain your sales leads are differentiated enough for your product. If you sell boat insurance, you'd better be calling boat owners, right? If you sell business insurance, a sales leads list of newly incorporated small businesses will be an easier sell than an established business.

I recommend:  Take a look at the variety of specific business leads lists available from our lead generation ...

Sales Training Programs Review: Solution Selling, Professional Selling Skills, Microsoft Solution Selling

Solution Selling , Microsoft Solution Selling and Professional Selling Skills

Professional Selling Skills

In my 14 years of selling, I have taken three different training courses on how to more effectively sell my products and services. The three courses I am going to discuss are Professional Selling Skills (at the time offered by Times Mirror Corp.), Solution Selling (by Sales Performance International), and Microsoft Solution Selling (by Sales Performance International and Microsoft). Each of these programs offer benefits to your sales team depending on their level of experience and the types of things they are selling.
The first program I took was Professional Selling Skills in 1995. This consisted of a seven week training program including product training (yes it was really seven weeks long) before my company shipped me out to my territory in Southern California. This was great initial course to help me understand the differences between open and closed probing questions and how to get to the need behind the need for the buyer. One my favorite aspects of this program was the four levels of sales competency. They are as follows:
  • Unconsciously Incompetent: This the phase when the sales rep is not even aware they are asking closed questions and not recognizing buying signs or when the prospect is losing interest in the conversation.
  • Consciously Incompetent: About two weeks into the program most of us were trying ...

Best Sales Call Follow Up Techniques

In today's fast paced world - what's the best method of followup from a sales call? A phone call? An email? These follow up methods are frequently used - but the best method to follow up with your sales leads is through a handwritten note.

A handwritten note portrays a classic business feeling - the contact will be impressed that you took the time and effort to send a note when so few people do. A handwritten note isn't the end of contact with your sales lead, but a method of contact which opens the door for further follow up with your potential client. Studies have shown it can take 4-6 contacts before you close your first sale, but using a handwritten note can increase the likelihood of making a sale.

A handwritten note shows your client that you recognize them as an individual and value the time you invest with them.

Recently, I spoke with several different insurance agents. One of them sent me a mass mailing flyer while the other sent me a handwritten note confirming a lunch meeting and then followed up with a personalized thank you note. Guess which agent is going to get my business?

In the world of text messages and emails, don't be afraid to use a classic, old-fashioned method of contact to improve your chances with your sales contacts.

As first reported on the That Network blog at Jerm.com, the CompTIA Network+ exam is getting a facelift.

The CompTIA Network+ certification has seen several changes over the last decade of its existence. The last revision was 2005 (with several minor updates in 2007), but CompTIA is currently preparing a major revision of the exam: the CompTIA Network+ 2008 certification. This revision will update the exam to include newer technologies and best practices, and will reorganize the exam and create added focus on Security. With new information about wireless and newer networking technologies including, the Network+ exam will test your current knowledge.

The CompTIA Network+ 2005 exam had four major domains:

  1. Media and Topologies (20%)
  2. Protocols and Standards (20%)
  3. Network Implementation (25%)
  4. Network Support (35%)

CompTIA is expanding these domains to a total of six domains with the 2008 release (final specs not yet released):

  1. Network Technologies
  2. Network Media and Topologies
  3. Network Devices
  4. Network Management
  5. Network Tools
  6. Network Security

One of the benefits we see for individuals pursuing the 2008 version of the Network+ is the enhanced focus on the hands-on aspect of network troubleshooting. By breaking out Network Tools and Network Security, CompTIA chose to increase focus and exposure on these two critical areas.

As with the 2005 version of the certification, the 2008 Network+ certification is for networking technicians with 9-12 months of experience who have achieved an A+ certification. Those individuals who ...

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)

The PMBOK, a formalized set of knowledge about project management, is published by the Project Management Institute (also the folks behind the PMP certification). The PMBOK is a process based approach to managing projects. The processes PMI documents in the PMBOK are:

  • Initiating: defines and authorizes the project (i.e. create project charter).

  • Executing: carries out project plans.
  • Controlling and Monitoring: assesses actual project outcomes to planned targets and makes corrective actions when necessary.
  • Closing: obtains a formal acceptance of the product/service by stakeholders and tapers out project activities in a planned, organized fashion.

The PMBOK defines nine knowledge areas, organized by their role in a project. The knowledge areas are separated into three groups: core knowledge areas, facilitating knowledge areas, and the coordination knowledge area. The knowledge areas are:

  • Core Knowledge Areas
